Synopsis
The management of acute and chronic pain in oral and maxillofacial surgery practice is challenging and often frustrating with the advent of new pharmacologic agents and an impending paradigm shift in the way we deliver postoperative analgesia. Review the pathophysiology of acute and chronic pain and standard drug regimens, and acquaint participants with new agents, while providing insight into anticipated changes in pain management.
Learning Objectives
- Identify the pathophysiology of acute versus chronic pain and make appropriate clinical decisions in managing each.
- Describe upcoming changes in the formulation of analgesics and how they may impact the practice of oral and maxillofacial surgery.
