Synopsis
This session will update and review significant pathogens, antibiotic resistance, and new and familiar antibiotics. Best practices for antibiotic therapy will be identified, including culturing, empiric antibiotics for head and neck infections, minimizing antibiotic resistance and highly resistant organisms. Important issues in the pharmacology of antibiotics and antibiotics in development are discussed.
Learning Objectives
- Describe the changing microbiology of odontogenic infections according to our current understanding, and identify antibiotic resistant pathogens when they arise.
- Identify cases in which culture and sensitivity testing are indicated and use culture harvesting techniques that are least likely to result in contaminated samples.
- Compare the costs, toxicities, and drug interactions of currently available antibiotics that are appropriate for head and neck infections.
