    Synopsis

Trigeminal nerve injury occurs following routine OMS procedures, usually third molar surgery. Injuries are classified (Seddon, Sunderland) based upon the likelihood of an injured nerve to recover spontaneously. The clinical testing should be simple and performed by all oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Pharmacologic and non-surgical treatments are available, but microneurosurgery should not be delayed when indicated. Surgical repair involves neurolysis and preparation of nerve stumps to perform neurorrhaphy, but nerve grafting or entubulation may also be used. This surgical clinic is designed to provide the requisite information necessary for the OMS regarding diagnosis, management and appropriate referral.

    Learning Objectives
    1. Permit access to care for the patients who sustain complications.
    2. Discuss how to appropriatley test patients to determine the degree of nerve injury.
    3. Demonstrate standards in this field of microneurosurgery of the trigeminal nerve.
